Lefkada

Lefkada, like most Greek islands, is a rocky and mountainous island on the Adriatic coast of Greece. I have never seen forests of wild cypress trees before, but you can see a lot of those beautiful green needles sticking out from the rocky landscape in the area. The island is a very popular place among tourists, especially the little Lafkada town at the end of it, but there a lot of wild and secluded beaches, where access is often very difficult by land or they are only accessible by a boat. We managed to get to two of those beaches to swim and dive into the beautiful and clear turquoise waters.

On our last day on the island, I managed to film the beautiful waves of turquoise blue water, crashing against the long and empty pebbly beach on the wilder west side of the island. You can see the video here: https://youtu.be/UII-OBU_Vlg

The ourskirts of Lefkada town.
Blooming Oleanders everywhere in Greece.
The best little beach with natural shade and perfectly clear water that we found.
The town Vasiliki is another major spot but on the south tip of the island. Whilst we were staying there, it seemed that there is a windsurfing event going on. Every day in the afternoon the wind was strong and constant and dozens of windsurfers were flying over the water with great speed.

Rhododendron Forest in Bloom

The evergreen Rhododendron Ponticum is a native plant to the Strandja mountain in Bulgaria. It has survived the last ice age as this part of the continent remained ice free. It loves the deep, shady and humid gorges, as it can get very dry and hot in this part of the country in the summer. Together with the Eastern beech tree and the local varieties of ivy and other wild vines, it forms thick and lush forests that often resemble real jungle. It is a protected species in Bulgaria and the areas where it grows are usually reserves or protected areas withing the boundaries of Strandja Natural Park. The blooming of the Zelenika, as they call it here, attracts visitors from around the country each year. These dark, rocky, wet and lush with vegetation stream valleys are favourite spots of mine to visit in spring.

In 2020 the pandemic gave me an unique opportunity to record sounds in real-time for long periods of time completely without or with very few interruptions by jet planes flying over. I managed to record an eight hour recording of the sounds in this forest and to turn it into a “no loop” birdsong video. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/nlRfDVSebAA

Snowy Bozhentsi

Bozhentsi is the name of one of the most well preserved traditional village in Bulgaria. It is an architectural and historical reserve since 1964 and is also part of UNESCO‘s cultural monuments. This year I was lucky to be in the area when a whole day of snowing was expected. I wouldn’t miss this chance to film this magnificent and quiet (especially in these pandemic times) village, so I prepared myself for a whole day of shooting and driving in the snow. It was a beautiful snowy day and I decided to film in the mountains first and to come back to Bozhentsi at dusk. I wanted to film the village covered in snow within the blue hour with the lights of street lanterns and house windows shining. When I returned to the village just before dark, the conditions were perfect – everything was covered with a fresh thick layer of snow, the lights were on and it was still quietly snowing. Nothing was moving on the streets except for some cats, that are so typical for Bulgarian villages. It was so magical and peaceful.

You can see these mesmerizing scenes here: https://youtu.be/ne7g_Os_8hM

The traditional architecture of an old Bulgarian house from this region is very well preserved in Bozhentsi.
This village is normally very popular with tourists, but these pandemic times made the streets very quiet.

Peaceful Forest River

In our modern days showing yourself on camera seems to be a thing. I have always been the man behind the camera and very, very rarely in front of it. It turns out that I have to adapt to the modern ways and update my mental programs. Or at least, that seems to be the solution and the only way to show myself to the people working at YouTube, that decide who deserves to be their partner and to work with them. I had to prove that I exist and I am the real person, made from flesh and bone, that really goes to all those places to film and record the beauty and peace of pristine nature. Part of this plan was to create a channel trailer, where I show myself filming at different places. One of those places was the little river close to my hometown of Burgas, where I filmed one of my very first videos for my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/IvjMgVS6kng). I did the awkward for me self filming part and since I was there and it was a beautiful morning and the birds were singing, I decided to film and record it again and make a new video with the soothing a bubbly sound of this river. This time I made it longer, so that people can have a good night sleep to it. Here it is: https://youtu.be/tPGZx_-Ervk
